The School of Theatre at Florida State University seeks a full time nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Costume Design to direct the MFA in Costume Design program beginning August 2022.

Responsibilities include teaching three courses per semester, which may include costume design, costume rendering, costume history, and costume crafts. Other responsibilities include oversight of the designs by students for productions and occasionally designing costumes for School of Theatre productions.
This position requires active departmental participation to include curriculum development, recruitment, student advising and season planning. Additionally, the successful candidate must maintain a robust agenda of professional creative activity and/or scholarship.


The successful candidate will have a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in costume design, at least three years’ experience teaching at college or university level, professional theatre design credit, and prior experience teaching graduate-level classes.
Must be able to communicate effectively with costume graduate and undergraduate students and collaborate successfully with directors, faculty and staff. The ability to mentor MFA costume design students regarding professional-level training in costuming is essential.
Applicants must possess advanced expertise in rendering, costume design, computer rendering, solid knowledge of historical period costumes, and experience with a wide variety of materials.
Candidates should demonstrate a proven commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion that creates an environment where diverse faculty, staff, and students thrive.


Special consideration will be given to United Scenic Artists members.
Experience in millinery construction, fabric modification, and costume crafts is preferred.
