The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. They are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required of personnel so classified.
The Engineering Staff will provide engineering support and technical direction for defining, designing, launching, and supporting NICOR’s solid-state lighting (SSL) product lines. The Associate Engineer will evaluate and test lighting fixtures and components for the residential and commercial lighting market. As prototype and finished products arrive, this person will verify and inspect items to ensure accuracy and performance standards are met as well as record and communicate any changes accordingly.
Engineering Manager

Verify and inspect new lighting products, including electrical testing, quality design, wet location acceptability, lumen output, and overall quality.

Perform photometric testing of luminaires with an integrated sphere.

Develop reports for all new products and participate in first article inspections and reporting.

Design accessories and options for lighting fixtures.

Works on other CAD related projects including large scale lighting layouts and documentation as necessary.

Assists with the design of lighting layouts using AGI32 or Dialux photometric design software.

Follows proper engineering practices to ensure products comply with regulatory standards (UL 1598, ETL, NEC & others).

Supports sustaining engineering projects.

Explores and analyzes new technologies as necessary.

Validation of component parts, ensuring they meet prints, first article inspections, and samples.

Provide support to manufacturing engineering in development of instructions.

Supports customer service as necessary to answer technical questions.

Follows established ECO/ECR processes for releasing product documentation.


Technical Degree in Electrical or Mechanical field or 2+ years of equivalent experience.
Knowledge of basic electrical concepts and wiring techniques.
Excellent communication skills both oral and written.
Able to assist with thermal testing of lighting products.
Ability to learn the NICOR ECNs (Engineering Changes Notices) processes.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel)
Ability to understand and troubleshoot solid state lighting products.
Experience in design, drafting and dimensioning of components.
Experience with developing detailed part and assembly drawings.


Experience with parametric modeling tools including SolidWorks, Revit or AutoCAD.
Strong knowledge of UL 1598, Title 24 (CEC) and other compliance agencies.
Experience with pc board design tools such as Altium or Mentor Graphics.
Ability to work with pc board schematic diagrams.
Experience with Integrated Sphere testing and photometric terminology.
Experience with Illustrator and InDesign for document creation of spec sheets and instruction sheets.


Responsive sense of urgency to take approved final product to customer in an efficient manner.
Participate in Engineering and Product Management meetings to determine, understand and communicate all aspects of the project and products pertaining to key customers
Schedule internal technical meetings as necessary to clarify the scope of project with engineering, and supply chain management
Extremely detail oriented; ability to track shipping, check technical documents, and follow up as necessary
Excellent organizational and written communication skills
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and manage business needs
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel)
Team player, strong collaboration skills
Must work well with or without supervision
Strong customer service focus and ability to communicate with customers


In a typical interior/warehouse/office environment: work performed in an office setting is largely a sedentary role, must be able to sit for long durations of time; warehouse environment with exposure to extreme temperatures, dirt, dust and fumes.
May require standing or walking for more than 4 hours per day.
Shop work building, modifying, and testing SSL prototypes using hand tools.
Laboratory work using electrical and mechanical test equipment.
Able to lift 40lbs.
Limited travel to various service/component suppliers’ meetings or industry conferences and trade shows.

Computer, phone, copier, fax machine, scanner, and standard office equipment
