Position Summary:
The Community Nutrition Educator I is responsible for 75% of the nutrition education, program implementation, and reporting requirements for the Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables program. The Community Nutrition Educator I is also responsible for: leading Worksite Wellness programs, the execution and management of Food Bank of Central New York’s seasonal programs, Central New York Health Bucks and Garden on the Go, and implementation of other nutrition programs.
CNY Health Bucks:
Coordinate Central New York Health Bucks program (CNYHB); collaborate with New York State Farmers Market Federation and Community Nutrition Manager (CNM) to determine markets to promote CNYHB distribution
Collaborate with CNM and other Food Bank nutritionists to select partner member programs to market CNYHB
Complete and submit annual reports for CNY Health Bucks
Distribute Health Bucks to farmers’ markets and Food Bank nutritionists and track distribution
Collaborate with Communications Manager to develop CNY Health Bucks coupon design and arrange printing of materials
Garden on the Go:
Coordinate Garden on the Go program for distribution to partner agencies
Coordinate acquisition of plants, seeds and root pouches for program
Work with Communications Manager to develop marketing materials and printing of care instructions
Collaborate with Development staff for volunteers to assemble kits and Operations staff for distribution
Just Say Yes to Fruits & Vegetables:
Assist in the implementation of a comprehensive nutrition education and obesity prevention program for low-income individuals accessing emergency food programs
Identify food pantries, shelters and soup kitchens that will participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Education Program (SNAP-Ed); participate in SNAP-Ed related duties
Plan, schedule, and conduct required minimum of 6 JSY nutrition education session and recipe demonstrations per month with at least 8 SNAP-eligible individuals per workshop at food pantries, soup kitchens, Fresh Food sites, and community organizations
Market JSY nutritional education sessions to food pantry operators and community partners to highlight nutrition education training opportunities that are available via printed materials and postings to the JSY public website
Promote the JSY Healthy Pantry Initiative (HPI) by increasing accessibility, distribution, and consumption of health foods; market JSY HPI to member food pantry programs
Assist in implementation of required HPIs (3) per year at partner member food pantries
Create and post a minimum, 1 social media post/month related to JSY program in collaboration with staff and Social Media Committee
Perform electronic recordkeeping and data collection internally and for JSY reporting to NYSDOH; submit monthly and quarterly JSY & other reports/documents in an accurate and timely manner to the CNM
Kids Café:
Conduct/provide Kids Café Club nutrition education, either in the form of onsite education or written materials, at Kids Café sites with school age children who attend the after school programs.
Nutrition Education:
Create nutrition education lesson, materials, and post presentation survey to be used to present at sites enhancing redemption of CNY Health Bucks at participating famers’ markets
Identify and respond to partner member nutrition education needs; collaborate with other nutrition educators to provide appropriate education materials
Monitor all expenses with guidance from CNM and Finance department
Assist, as needed, with dietetic interns or diet technician interns placed at Food bank
Public Health:
Participate in community/health fairs and community working groups as coordinated with CNM
Assist with implementation of staff wellness program – lead/attend worksite employee engagement and wellness committee meetings, organize events, provide onsite information, and maintain records for program
Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community partners
. Requirements:
Location: Office 40% / Traveling 60%
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8am-4:30pm (with occasional nights and/or weekends)
Education
Registered Dietitian or Dietetic Technician, Registered OR
Bachelor’s in Nutrition, Public Health, Health Education, or related field with at least 3 credit hours in introductory nutrition and 6 credit hours in community health, public health, health education or food science OR
Associate’s degree in Nutrition
AND
1-2 years’ community outreach and education experience working with low-income populations, including intern or volunteer experience
Knowledge/Skills
Ability to work with and design education experience for people of diverse ages, socio-economic status, and ethnic heritage
Strong written, verbal, and computer communication skills
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to represent the agency mission and services
Experience with facilitated group discussion techniques and educations
Ability to be flexible and manage a variable schedule; ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with other professionals and the public
Understand and connection of public health/nutrition, hunger, and the short and long term causes
Ability to plan, evaluate, and analyze programs and related data to work efficiently and effectively
ServSafe or other food safety certification recognized by the Conference on Food Protection
Physical
Ability to lift 30+ pounds
Valid NYS driver’s license with a clean driving record and reliable transportation
Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends
Ability to regularly travel throughout the region and occasionally around the state
