Content Writer/Editor
Position SummaryThe content writer/editor works within the Communications & Marketing Department, our in-house agency for the Institute’s Research, K–12 Education, Graduate School and Philanthropy groups. They will serve as project manager, content writer and editor for print and digital materials, and be the primary author of executive remarks and talking points.This position will collaborate closely across departments to create compelling and inspiring donor publications, annual reports, proposals, impact reports and other written collateral in support of Van Andel Institute. They will manage the full spectrum of the publications process, from content creation and project management through approvals, design and printing.The content writer/editor will assist with copy for newsletters, events and campaigns and use storytelling to develop persuasive content that inspires people to take meaningful actions in support of VAI’s research and education efforts.This position supports the Institute’s efforts to ensure consistency with VAI’s mission, vision, brand, design and delivery. The writer/editor will be part of a multi-functional, dynamic Communications & Marketing team and will report directly to the Director of Communications & Marketing.
Responsibilities
Serve as content contributor and project manager of several donor publications each year, including (but not limited to) VAI’s annual report, biannual donor magazine, impact reports and appeal campaigns.
Coordinate content generation and confirm approvals across the Institute.
Create compelling and timely content about VAI’s Research and Education initiatives, fundraising priorities and results for use in print, electronic and other communication channels. Craft personal and meaningful philanthropic stories that inspire action.
Organize information for effective presentation in publications, websites and other media.
Create compelling and timely content for donor proposals, appeals and evergreen informational collateral in coordination with the C&M and Philanthropy teams.
Manage multiple writing projects, often requiring tight turnaround time, for both print and digital uses.
Liaise between C&M and Philanthropy teams to develop annual appeal and stewardship communications. Interface with other departments to develop materials and secure approvals.
Write talking points and remarks, largely in support of events and Philanthropy.
Assist with proofing Institute materials as part of C&M proofing process.
Contribute to other C&M projects as needed.
Perform other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, communications or a related field from an accredited college or university.
Minimum of 2–3 years of experience in writing for development/fundraising, communications, media relations, or related field. Nonprofit experience preferred.
Understanding of branding and positioning, and how to apply it to donor materials.
Outstanding writing, editing, and proofreading skills. A keen eye for detail. Ability to tailor materials for various audiences and purposes.
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment on a highly collaborative team. Ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite applications and proficiency with the publications process. Familiarity with the Adobe suite a plus.
