Job Purpose
A SmartBrief full-time copy editor/writer searches, writes and copy edits various SmartBrief daily and non daily publications. The full-time copy editor/writer is managed by the Chief Copy Editor. Briefs may be dropped from or added to a copy editor/writer’s lineup as needed for scheduling purposes. The copy editor/writer searches and writes summaries for designated Tier 2 and Tier 3 briefs in their industry group. The copy editor/writer copy edits each summary in designated Tier 1 briefs. The copy editor/writer is expected to establish working relationships with the editors of these briefs. Searching and writing duties consist of:

Selecting and adding links of appropriate news source stories to be used in a brief via Curate or through Google news.
Writing headlines and 2-sentence summaries based on the source articles.
Finding and adding repurposed summaries into a brief.
Placing new and repurposed summaries in appropriate sections in a brief.

Requirements

You will be expected to copy edit Special Reports and Best Ofs, Partner Development and Product letters, as well as other content-marketing material as directed by the Chief or the Assistant Copy Chief. You should be available to pitch in on copy-editing briefs if a colleague is on vacation or out sick, be able to adapt to new systems and processes, as well as communicate with colleagues via Slack channels and email.
You may be asked to perform other duties such as adding sources to the internal database, developing our internal Editorial newsletter and copy-editing daily quotes that appear at the end of a brief.
You must have copy-editing and writing experience, preferable for daily newspapers or wire services so as to be comfortable working on tight deadlines every day. He or she also must be comfortable with trouble-shooting technical issues that may arise (or learn who to go to for help).
