Job Description

This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee’s role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired. This position requires an employee to be onsite 1-3 times per week.

The GM Body Team offers opportunities across a spectrum of engineering. These product engineering positions involve responsibility for all activities, including definition of requirements, execution of design, validation and testing. These roles require an experienced engineer to lead and drive a multi-functional product development team. In addition, they require collaboration with peers in the creative design, purchasing, manufacturing, and quality functions.

The ideal candidate is one who desires to build their technical depth as an engineer within the automotive Body enterprise. This candidate possesses outstanding communication, project management skills, and is a hardworking, person who enjoys seeking challenges and following through with robust solutions. Design Release Engineer
Exterior Lighting – This role requires an engineer to lead and drive a cross functional product development team (PDT) that includes lighting suppliers as key members. The role requires collaboration with peers in the creative design (Styling), purchasing, manufacturing, and quality functions.

Generating and executing technical solutions for Exterior Lighting Products to support new vehicle programs.
Working cross-functionally to implement process and product improvements and to support prototype and production build activities.
Balancing business imperatives, including, but not limited to cost, mass, and timing.
Communicating information to and from internal and external customer organizations.
Staying abreast of relevant new technology and competitive products.
Assist/Lead in the development of lamp engineering requirements

Design Release Engineer
Exterior Wipers/Washer, Air Inlet Panel, Fixed Glass – Our Design Release Engineers are responsible for development and robust design/integration of functional black plastic, fixed glass, and/or wiper/washer components. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Lead multi-functional team to ensure Requirements, CAE Standard Work, GMW’s, AVDP&R templates are harmonized and technically accurate
Develop component and sub-system best practice design solutions. Lead best practice integration of components to Body, Electrical, and HVAC Interfaces etc.
Ensure PDT timing template is detailed, accurate and multi-functionally coordinated.
Maintain Statement of Requirements (SOR) template, Sub System Technical Specification (SSTS) documents and ensure compliance thereof.
Lead Peer Review Process: Conduct high quality deep dive design reviews with program DRE’s to ensure all GM executions are technically accurate and aligned with BOM Strategies.
Benchmarking for Quality, Innovation, Cost, Mass and Technical Correctness; Understand Global Customer Markets; Support Field Actions Analysis; Facilitate Closed Loop Learning Globally; Ensure competitiveness of components and sub-systems.

Design Release Engineer
Bumper, Grille, Fascia & Exterior Trim – The BGFT (pronounced “Big Foot”) engineering department’s deliverables are key to winning our GM customers through attractive exterior styling and performance! Candidate’s primary responsibility is designing, engineering and releasing of exterior subsystems (BGFT).

Support the development of groundbreaking solutions for new technologies involving electric & autonomous vehicles, active safety, and lit elements.
Lead in-house designs, on time with quality, to meet all required program milestones/deliverables
Design and package both BGFT components and “directed buy” components such as sensors, cameras, harnesses, lamps, etc.
Lead the development of criteria/typical sections using Unigraphics math data; connect with the studio for surface development that meets requirements.
Balance subsystem imperatives (cost, timing, mass, warranty, etc.)
Perform appropriate design studies/alternatives, and present studies and business cases to the program team for efficient decision making
Build Interface Control Documents (ICD) requirements for component and subsystem interfaces.
Lead launch efforts for BGFT by working closely with the assembly plant(s) and cross-functional personnel to quickly bring issues to resolution

Design Release Engineer
– Automotive Accessories – The Accessories team provides the customer an opportunity to personalize their vehicle. We offer parts across the entire vehicle, including Interior, Exterior, Electrical, Lighting and Wheels.

Support the development of groundbreaking solutions for new technologies involving electric & autonomous vehicles, active safety, and lit elements.
Lead in-house designs, on time with quality, to meet all required program milestones/deliverables
Design, package and enable accessory components
Lead the development of criteria/typical sections using Unigraphics math data; connect with the studio for surface development that meets requirements.
Balance subsystem imperatives (cost, timing, mass, warranty, etc.)
Perform appropriate design studies/alternatives, and present studies and business cases to the accessory execution team for efficient decision making

Additional Job Description

Education Required:

Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering

Experienced Required:

2 or more years of experience with developing and executing technical solutions for electrical / mechanical components to support new vehicle programs
Communicate information to and from internal and external customer organizations

Preferred Skills:

Master’s Degree or other Advanced Degree
Plastics Design
Vehicle or new product launch processes
Stamping and metal forming design knowledge
Injection molded plastic tooling and design knowledge
Familiarity with Design For Six Sigma process
Experience with DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effect Analysis) and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing)
Familiarity with Design for Manufacturing (DFM)
