The Development Writer works under the Director of Campaign Communications to develop effective messaging for print and digital publications that support Chapman’s first comprehensive campaign. Projects include campaign white papers; proposals for individual donors, foundations and corporations; case statements for campaign priorities; and other materials as needed.ResponsibilitiesContent Writing: ·
Develop content for print and digital publications that help the university secure philanthropic gifts.
Projects include, major gift proposals, gift agreements and other gift documents.
Develop and write funding proposals for individuals, foundations and corporations.
Write clear, accurate and persuasive copy that helps prospective donors understand that their gifts will have a lasting impact on the university, its students and the community.
Re write, edit and proofread documents from others as requested.
Ensure that all projects follow the AP Stylebook, the university style guide and existing templates.
Design and create final proposals and other documents to enhance solicitation efforts.
Strategic Engagement Communication:
Meet with other members of the Strategic Engagement and Development team to discuss their communication needs and develop a plan and timeline to meet those needs.
Research topics across a range of academic disciplines, synthesize that information and summarize it in a clear, concise presentation.
Develop a plan of action for each proposal.
Support the development of stewardship reports and materials to enable team to access impact of gift(s).
Work with faculty, program staff and development staff to ensure that each proposal is consistent with the program’s statement of need, goals/objectives, implementation plan, evaluation methods and budget.
Work with the Strategic Engagement and Development team to customize proposals and/or conduct research to ensure they produce a positive response.
Other Fundraising materials:
Provide copy and materials for gift acknowledgement letters and other stewardship materials.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent level of training and experience
Demonstrated work experience in writing for development/fundraising, communications, media relations or related field.
Experience writing fundraising letters and collateral.
Excellent communication skills, including the ability to tailor writing to a variety of individual styles and make a persuasive case.
Excellent proofreading and editing skills, including abilities to prepare materials using best practices in proposal development writing, understanding the university’s branding.
Knowledge of established elements of a funding proposal including budget preparationAbility to maintain confidentiality
Ability to prioritize goals and tasks
Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain working relationships within University Advancement and the greater campus community.
Research and analytical skills to compile data and make recommendations based on findings.
Technical skills to learn and use enterprise systems and departmental tools.
Knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office Suite applications
Ability to learn and interpret university and department policies.
Design knowledge and experience utilizing Adobe Creative Suite applications
Knowledge of Cascade CMS
Master’s degree preferred
