Job Description

At KIPP DC, we believe that great teachers are the most important part of creating a school environment where students can achieve. The Director of Teacher Leadership is charged with creating transparent and compelling pathways for teachers to stay in the classroom as well as opportunities to develop teachers who one day wish to move into leadership roles. The Director of Teacher Leadership will lead the research, design and ultimately execution of our network-wide teacher leadership programming. This individual will be responsible for learning about and assessing our current offerings and creating a vision for the model moving forward including teacher leader selection, programming and compensation. This individual will then be responsible for executing and continually reflecting on, reevaluating and refining the model. This is a unique opportunity given the leadership and innovation expected in this role. The Director of Teacher Leadership is an exempt role and will report to the Senior Managing Director of Knowledge and Learning. This start date for this position is flexible between February and June 2022.

Stakeholder Engagement

Conduct a network wide inventory of current teacher leader offerings including the type of roles, the selection processes, the skills/competencies required and the compensation.

Learn from stakeholders what the need is for teacher leader development.

Strategic Planning

Create a vision for what teacher leadership should look like at KIPP DC and how it aligns with other development and pathway work.

Cultivate stakeholder engagement to craft a 1 to 5 year plan for the design of this work moving forward and to build buy-in along the way.

Program Management

Lead the execution of the decided upon KIPP DC teacher leader model and continue to reflect and refine the model.

Publish a teacher leadership plan so that all KIPP DC teachers understand the teacher leader opportunities available to them.

Collaborate with members of the Talent and Knowledge and Learning teams to connect the teacher leader work across development pathways and align teacher leader work to selection systems, compensation, and retention efforts.

Share results of teacher leader initiatives using data, including retention rates for teachers, impact on students, and look at teacher leaders by race, gender, and age demographics.



Bachelor’s Degree required

10+ years of work experience in education and/or talent development with demonstrated record of results

4+ years of experience as a teacher leader or school leader preferred

Deep commitment to racial and educational equity and the building of an organization that reflects the community KIPP DC serves; ability to hold self and others accountable for centering equity

Experience designing and leading large scale design and execution projects

Outstanding vision-setting, design, project planning and program execution skills

Strong ability to build relationships and navigate interpersonal situations including communicating with a diverse set of stakeholders

Strong ability to influence and motivate others through written and verbal communication

Flexibility and creativity to succeed in innovative environments

Unquestioned integrity and commitment to KIPP DC’s mission and to advancing its antiracist ambition through work with staff, students, alumni, and families

Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook
