The Houston Public Library (HPL) seeks a customer-service driven, creative, and energetic librarian with strong leadership skills, and ability to inspire staff, and a passion for serving as a hands-on and highly engaged Librarian III-Youth Manager at the Central Library. Working with the Central library leadership team, this position will be responsible for developing and implementing industry leading services and programs at the Central Library for youth and their families ages 0-18. The Central Library is located in the heart of downtown Houston and serves a wide range of customers that represents the diversity, complexity and vitality of a large urban setting serving both the people working in the downtown area and the growing residential community downtown. In 2021, the Central Library celebrated the grand opening of the Barbara Bush Literacy Plaza and re-opened its doors as a reimagined space for all customers. With space on both the first floor and the fourth floor, the Central Library is becoming a destination location for programs for all ages.
Essential job duties for the Central Library Librarian III-Youth include:

Responsible for services and programs for youth of all ages for the Central Library
Trains, inspires, persuades, and guides youth services staff
Plans and implements outreach to the burgeoning residential population of Downtown Houston.
Analyzes and evaluates demographic and other data for planning effective services
Assists with marketing new and existing programs and services
Coordinates and collaborates with the System-wide Programming team and the Central Library programming team
Leads or participates in committees and other work groups
Serves as the person in charge of the entire Central Library for weekends and evenings; and
Work one evening a week and every other weekend (Saturday and/or Sunday); and
Perform other administrative duties as assigned.

Take initiative to creatively solve problems and possess sound decision-making skills;
Be able to develop effective working relationships in a large urban library environment
Possess demonstrated leadership skills and experience supervising and evaluating assigned staff
Inspire, motivate, and mentor others
Have experience with project management as it relates to program and event planning
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
Provide exceptional customer service
Be at ease multitasking in a fast-paced public service setting; and
Enjoy interacting with people of all ages from diverse backgrounds

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTSRequires a Master of Library Science degree from a school accredited by the American Library Association.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSThree (3) years of library experience are required, including one (1) year of management experience.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $60,320.00 – $64,448.00 per year
