Full Job Description5-10 Years in the fastener Industry as Quality
The Role:
You will be an integral part of the Fastener Engineering organization, pursuing our mission to provide Fasteners, Processes, and Joining methods that equip Tesla’s Engineers and Manufacturing Facilities with a competitive advantage in their mission to design and produce products that accelerate the world to sustainable energy. You will work closely with our engineering teams in the early phases of design to suggest and implement the best-joining methods for systems to control assembly time, cost and process are as lean as possible from the start.
Responsibilities:
Leads thread-forming fastener and joint design across all programs
Champions fastener and joint engineering across all programs
Facilitates mechanical joint/fastener reviews to discover opportunities for consistency, complexity, and cost control
Collaborates across design/manufacturing and quality teams to develop the best fastening/joining methodology for manufacturing/production
Performs detailed analysis of fastened joints (e.g. torque vs clamp load, grip range check, thread engagement requirements)
Design fasteners (2D and 3D) and releases them into the Fastener Library and Tesla PLM.
Liaises with procurement and supplier quality team members to source fasteners and create an approved supplier list for each commodity
Collaborates with multiple teams to design a robust joint with ease of manufacturing, ease of service, cost per part, and reliability in mind
Requirements:
BS/MS Degree in Mechanical, Materials Engineering, or related field
Exceptional understanding of the interactions between the torque, clamp load, friction, thread forming/prevailing torque
2+ years of experience in fastener engineering or related field
Experience developing torque values based on design requirements
2+ years of experience of 2D and 3D design (Catia V5/V6 Preferred)
Experience with fastener/joint tests, (e.g., destructive and non-destructive tests, clamp load, torque, joint slip test, etc.)
Experience with GD&T and quality control
Strong understanding of forging, machining, thread forming, heat treatment, and coatings
Design experience with thread forming screws for plastics, as well as sheet and bulk metals
Design experience with structural and pop rivets
