TEACHER ASSISTANT
TITLE: Teacher Assistant
CLASSIFICATION: Teacher Assistant
REPORTS TO: Department Supervisor and Program Teacher
EFFECTIVE: September 1, 2022
LOCATION: Northwest Education Services Special Education Centers, including Life Skills Center, Bridgeway, New Horizons, and
Creekside
EMPLOYMENT
TERMS: Approximately 184 days during the school year – as per the terms of the master agreement for Teacher Assistants
EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated by the classroom teacher and supervisor.
Position Summary:
The role of the teacher assistant is to assist in and facilitate student engagement and participation in educational instruction, activities, and routines initially designed by certified staff. Teaching assistants are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of all information regarding students; to communicate programmatic information concerning students with the teacher; to understand and meet student needs derived from medical, physical, behavioral, social or emotional conditions within the school environment under the supervision of the teacher or other certified staff.
Job Qualifications:
1. Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds. Students in SXI rooms are moved from chair to equipment to changing table, back to chairs. Could be 8-10 lifts per day/per student to get them to mechanical lift.
2. Interact with students and supervise classroom activities, playground, and lunchroom.
3. Work in a consistent and individualized manner with students.
4. Willingness to work in areas of: a. Self-help – feeding and toileting (transfer or help student from chair to toilet, diapering, dressing) b. Medical procedures – gastric tube feedings, tracheostomy care; c. Issue and administer medication per district policy – ensure correct meds and dosage are given including documentation of administering drugs.
5. Keep classroom records including attendance, behavior documentation, and lunch count.
6. Knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorder and physical, cognitive, and emotional impairments desirable.
7. Participate in crisis management training. May have to use physical management techniques to keep students safe.
8. Willingness to deal with a wide range of student behaviors including aggressiveness
(hitting, striking out, kicking at staff).
9. Understand and follow policy on confidentiality.
10. Interact appropriately with the public.
11. Work effectively as a team player. Share workload responsibility with classroom staff.
12. Daily attendance required for consistency with students.
13. Learn and implement emergency medical procedures as needed. Use quick judgment to determine if student is in crisis and recognize needs of medical attention: seizures, shortness or stoppage of breathing or choking.
14. Participate in adaptive physical education and swim with students during swimming programs.
15. Accompany student(s) into mainstreamed classes and adapt directions and assignments to meet student needs.
16. Willingness to acquire and develop knowledge of computer technology for use with students or to prepare instructional materials.
17. Willingness to be trained on the use of assistive technology – Use, teach, update student communication devices.
18. Direct students in community-based instruction. Involves taking students into the community unassisted and teaching how to access services, use of public transportation, using good judgment in cross streets, and making sure students understand personal safety.
19. Ability to drive students in vehicle.
20.Other duties assigned by the classroom teacher and/or supervisor.
