Are you interested in developing Web Content for all of Seattle Public Utilities’ (SPU) web presence? SPU is seeking a Web Content Editor
and a Web Content Specialist (both Public Relations Spec, Sr positions). These positions ensure SPU’s external website meet strategic goals by developing and implementing plans for websites in near and long terms; reviews, edits, and approves changes to the external website, with emphasis on increasing readability, usability, accessibility, and search optimization for our customers.

The positions coordinate with Seattle IT to maintain website functionality, administer permissions in content management systems, create and configure content types, and collaborate on large-scale updates.

The incumbents will communicate with SPU leadership about website performance, create and disseminate reports, make recommendations for data-driven updates, and apply to long term web strategy. The positions will actively represent the priorities and interests of the SPU Community Affairs Division and SPU as a community centered utility. These priorities and interests include SPU’s commitment to inclusive public engagement, transparency in decision-making processes, and service equity.

The positions will report to the Community Affairs Strategic Advisor and are responsible for providing up to date and timely information about health, safety, and essential utility services to our customers.

Job Responsibilities:

Responsibilities/Duties for both the Web Content Specialist, and Editor
:

Ensure that SPU web properties meet strategic goals by coordinating and executing content plans.
Review, edit, implement, and approve changes to the 500 page external website, with emphasis on increasing readability, usability, accessibility, and search optimization for our customers.
Consult and mentor content owners and hands-on departmental editors with writing for the web and other best practices.
Coordinate periodic content audits for accuracy, completeness, and relevance.
Ensure timely responses to support requests and maintain positive collaborative relationships with web contributors across SPU.
Edit web and digital properties using content management system(s) and maintain quality assurance checks on a regular basis.
Analyze web usage and other quality control data to set benchmarks and best practices for SPU web properties.
Create documentation of web content processes, guidelines, and standards at the departmental level.
Use tools such as Google Analytics, SiteImprove, and others to track performance and recommend adoption of new tools as needed.

Web Content Editor (additional duties unique to the Editor role)-

Serve as liaison to Seattle IT to maintain existing website functionality, coordinating layout and brand redesigns and other large-scale updates.
Collaborates on some system administration functions for SPU department.
Act as the liaison to SPU branches and other City departments for project intake, scope, and plan development.
Communicate with SPU leadership and governance committee about website performance, create and disseminate reports to make recommendations for data-driven updates and apply to long term web strategy.
Leads the development and documentation of web content processes, guidelines, and standards at the departmental level.
Provide strong leadership in a matrixed environment for web content owners on web/digital content governance.

Qualifications:

Experience: Two (2) years’ professional experience in public relations, marketing, or journalism specific to editing or writing customer-facing content for responsive websites.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Administration, Marketing, Technical Communication, Journalism, English, or related discipline.

Combinations of appropriate education, training, certification, and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability to the minimum education and experience requirements.

To be successful in this role, you should possess some of the following skills/experience:

3-5 years’ professional experience editing or writing customer-facing content for responsive websites.
Understanding of web analytics, Search Engine Optimization (SEO), and related tools to improve the performance and accessibility of online properties. City currently uses Google Analytics and SiteImprove.
Demonstrated knowledge of website content development lifecycles, including requirements gathering, functional design, user experience testing, and delivery.
Familiarity with various content management systems; Ingeniux, WordPress, and GovDelivery systems a plus.
Demonstrated technical skills, including proficiency in HTML, CSS, Photoshop, and data tools.
Experience working within and extending an existing set of brand guidelines and standards.
Experience working in large government institutions.
Self-directed, well-organized, and able to maintain high levels of production with limited supervisory oversight.
Ability to work with multiple tasks and meet deadlines, maintain confidentiality and a sense of humor, use good judgment and discretion, and interact with a diverse workforce within SPU.
Experience leading and participating in technology projects.
